Animatic Revenge Of The Sith Deleted Scene

Posted By Mike on November 22, 2007:

Now up at Starwars.com

From the main site:

"Now in the StarWars.com video player: A never before released animatic of a Revenge of the Sith deleted scene. The script originally had a scene in which Obi-Wan Kenobi ventures into the dragon pens of Utapau to find a mount to explore the sinkhole city. He chooses the most gregarious of the lizards, Boga. The scene never made it far past the animatic stage. In this early cut, Ben Burtt provides the voiceover for Kenobi and the aliens, and Boga's gender is different from the final."

Star Wars Peer-to-Peer Pleads Guilty

Posted By JG on September 12, 2006:

ROTS downloaded before it hit theaters ...

The Justice Department issued a press release today about the copyright infrindgement case that involved Star Wars:Episode III. Here's a clip of the ground breaking case. If you want the full story, follow this link:

Scott R. McCausland, 24, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit copyright infringement and one count of criminal copyright infringement in violation of the Family Entertainment Copyright Act. His guilty plea stems from his involvement in the BitTorrent peer-to-peer (P2P) network previously known as Elite Torrents. The plea was entered before U.S. District Court Judge Sean J. McLaughlin for the Western District of Pennsylvania. McCausland, who is scheduled to be sentenced on Dec.12, 2006, faces up to five years in prison, a fine of $250,000, and three years of supervised release.

"This groundbreaking case demonstrates the commitment of the Department of Justice to prosecute individuals who use new technologies to undermine the copyright laws," said U.S. Attorney Buchanan. "It also serves as an example to those who believe that there is anonymity in cyberspace."

The Elite Torrents P2P network offered a virtually unlimited content selection, including illegal copies of copyrighted works before their availability in retail stores or movie theatres. For example, the defendant supplied the network with the final entry in the Star Wars series, "Episode III: Revenge of the Sith," more than six hours before it was first shown in theatres. In the next 24 hours, it was downloaded from the Elite Torrents network more than 10,000 times.

    Academy Blunder on Revenge Nomination

Posted By Mark on February 2, 2006:

    A wrong name causes confusion...

While Revenge of the Sith picked up its nomination in the makeup category the other day, an error has left both the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences red faced, and makeup artist Annette Miles downhearted.

Miles, who contributed to Episode III, was incorrectly mentioned as one of two names nominated for the movie's work, when it should have been another Australian, Nikki Gooley, along with Dave Elsey. The error was not picked up until after the nominations were made, and the information passed on to journalists worldwide.

It wasn't the best of days in the end for Annette, who also missed out on being mentioned for fellow makeup nominee The Chronicles of Narnia, of which she also had a major hand in.

Seven Admit Copying Star Wars DVD

Posted By Dustin on January 28, 2006:

Each person faces up to $100,000.00 in fines and one year in jail . . .

    From BBC News:

Seven Star Wars fans have admitted copying Revenge of the Sith a week before its cinema release.

They admitted piracy charges after copying and passing a DVD copy of the movie among them last May.

The six US men and one woman also pleaded guilty to criminal conduct in allowing an eighth person to obtain the film and upload it onto the internet.

They each face a maximum penalty of a $100,000 (£56,000) fine and one year in jail when sentenced on 12 April.

    Copyright law

Prosecutors said 28-year-old Albert Valente took a copy of George Lucas's final Star Wars movie from a post-production facility in Los Angeles last May.

It was then passed to Jessie Lumada, 28, Ramon Valdez, 30, Michael Fousse, 42, Dwight Wayne Sityar, 27, Stephani Gima, 25, and Joel De Sagun Dimaano, 33. All seven are from Los Angeles County.

Mr Dimaano then passed a copy to work colleague Marc Hoaglin, 28, from Huntington Beach, who last month admitted putting a copy on the internet.

New US laws make uploading a film before its DVD release a federal crime. Mr Hoaglin is due to be sentenced in March.

Hollywood studios said movie piracy cost the film industry $3.5bn (£1.95bn) per year.

"We are glad to see the Star Wars thieves brought to justice," the Motion Picture Association of America said in a statement.

"Stealing copyrights is a serious problem, and the theft and illegal distribution of Revenge of the Sith was a glaring example of how the actions of dishonest people can cheat the movie-watching experience."

Revenge of the Sith went on to take $848.5m (£474.6m) at the global box office.

We've had some fans write in recently asking about when Revenge of the Sith or any of the 5 other Star Wars films will be available for the new Sony Play Station Portable ( PSP ) in it's UMD format ( Universal Media Disk ).

According to Lucasfilm there are currently no plans to release any of the films in this format. Which of course doesn't mean "no", so there is always hope!

Linking Revenge Of The Sith To A New Hope

Trisha Biggar talks about her work on the prequels . . .

The editor from Variety.com sent us this link to a current article they're running about Trisha Biggar's work on the prequels.

    Here's a snippet:

"A long time ago, the "Star Wars" galaxy was a far simpler place. With "Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith," costume designer Trisha Biggar faced the unique task of bridging George LucasGeorge Lucas' three prequels to the landmark 1977 film -- a transition that came down to the moment Anakin Skywalker becomes black-helmeted Darth Vader.

Biggar remembers the filming of Vader's sleek black costume and iconic mask. "Even for the crew it was a big moment," she says. "The set was swarming with people who'd sneaked inside."

2005 was a great year to have "Star Wars" in your title . . .

The editor from Variety.com sent us this link to a current article they're running about Star Wars video games in 2005.

    Here's a snippet:

"Mirroring the B.O.B.O. success of "Revenge of the Sith," games based on the sci-fi franchise accounted for four of the five top-selling Hollywood licensed games of 2005 in North America. Those four were also the only games with a studio tie-in to break into the overall top 10, according to data from industry tracker NPD Group and publishers.

"Star Wars" has proved one of the most successful franchises in the vidgame world and got an added boost in 2005 from release of "Revenge of the Sith."

    Star Wars Mock Up Prototypes

Posted By Dustin on January 16, 2006:

Check out what Revenge of the Sith might have looked like . . .

Rebelscum Forum member Dax shares his prototype collection with us, including the original ideas for the Revenge of the Sith line. Check out what might have been on the toys you collect, including an early name consideration for Episode III.

Here's some modern goodies for all you prototype fans. The following are mock-up items used to present to clients prior to the product entering the final manufacturing phase. Some of the items are close to the finished product, many are quite different. I'm sure if you're a fellow prototype collector and particularly of packaging you'll love this!

Unfortunately one of the worst condition items in the set but still nice to see with the different graphics and slightly different layout used. The back of the card is unprinted.

I actually prefer the look of this packaging compared to the final version. Inside is a cutout of the character to give retailers an idea of how the finished product would look. The item has sides and base but no top.

Very close to the finished item from the front, the only real difference being the bubble that covers the entire front of the card including the peg hook. It does feature a strange cut out just belog the peg hook which I can't work out what it was for.

Now the back is very interesting though as it is a 4 lightsaber attack Grevious (character #9) though it features the character as #44. The figure design is an earlier version showing the action feature operated by the legs, not the head. All the other figures on the back are from an earlier series, not ROTS giving some indication of the stage at which this packaging was designed. The overall layout is not that much different from the final product although it does sport the "Birth of the Empire" title.

Another mock-up with a cardboard cut out illustrating where the toy would sit within the package. Almost identical to the final product except for the bubble design. The final product features a prominant name plate at the top of the bubble. The prototype has a tapering curved top and the name just about the "Force Battlers" logo. The bubble itself is made from an almost satin finished plastic which is a rougher finish. The same type of material I have on a VOTC clam shell prototype from a few years back.

Now here is a totally different mock up for the same line. The first time I saw this I was totally blown away and I really love the design and layout. Almost 80's like in its colours. I'm not sure where the bubble is from, it appears to be from something else with the top cut off to fit the general size. The bubble is taped in place. Ignore the eraser at the bottom, that's just there to prop up the bubble.

Again an early version of the packaging with a number of differences from the final product. Probably the most obvious is the different name of the Federation Droid Fighter but there are many other smaller differences as well.

The Sneak Preview version of Anakin's Starfighter again with numerous small differences and one big one. There's that "Birth of the Empire" logo again which I kinda like better than Revenge of the Sith. Each time I look at this I notice even more differences, such as the wings open on the prototype version but closed on the final release.

These two are probably my favourite items possibly because you get two different versions of the same piece and both are quite different from the final layout and design. I think this design is perhaps more aesthetically pleasing to the adult collector while the final product has more appeal to kids. This version is complete with the clear window included.

Same layout only the "Birth of the Empire" logo substituted. This earlier version has a minor difference from the later version on the back (neither back contains graphics), plus it features the Cyan trim lines that would not be printed in the production version. Just because I like them so much here's another image.

I hope you find these items as exciting and interesting as I did when I first saw them. Hopefully it will also generate some interesting discussion about them as well. Enjoy :)

Thanks to Rebelscum forum member Dax for sharing his collection of packaging mockups with us. Some very cool stuff there. For more info, check out this thread in the Rebelscum forums. Dax also shares some more mockups from the POTF2 and VOTC line in the mini-gallery below.

    George Accepts Peoples Choice

Posted By Dustin on January 10, 2006:

Updated! The people have spoken . . .

The 32nd People's Choice awards are being held tonight ( January 10th ) and Revenge of the Sith has won both Favorite Movie: Drama, and Favorite Movie. George Lucas was on hand for the ceremony to accept the awards.

Bill Engelhardt from Orlando writes in with this:

Revenge of the Sith just won two People's Choice Awards: Favorite Movie and Favorite Movie Drama. Harrison Ford was the presenter for Favorite Movie, for which the nominees were Episode III, Hitch, and Batman Begins. When he announced Sith as the winner, he said, "The Force is strong in this one." George Lucas was in attendance to accept the award, and it was obvious that he was moved to receive it. Here was his speech:

"Thank you. Thank you all. This is a very, very important award for me. Star Wars, oddly enough, doesn't really get that many awards. I'm not a big favorite with the critics, but who listens to them? I'm not a big industry favorite either, but of course they are a bunch of studio executives. The most important people for any filmmaker, the reason that I make films, is for you! The audience rules! Thank you. Thank you very much!"

Lucas Collector Set Now Available Online

Posted By Dustin on January 6, 2006:

The entire Lucas clan can now be yours . . .

The George Lucas Family Set is now available exclusively at StarWarsShop!

Eagle-eyed fans watching Revenge of the Sith may have noticed George Lucas' first-ever Star Wars cameo as the blue-faced Baron Papanoida waiting outside the Coruscant Opera House. What some may not realize, however, is that the entire Lucas enclave -- Katie, Amanda, and Jett Lucas -- also made brief appearances in the movie, immortalized now for the first time as Hasbro action figures!

This exclusive four-figure set includes three brand new sculpts available only at StarWarsShop. Included in the set are:

  • Baron Papanoida (George Lucas) -- An influential Wroonian guild baron with contacts throughout the galaxy, Baron Papanoida is rumored to have an information network that rivals that of the Bothans. His ultimate allegiance, however, remains unknown.
  • Chi Eekway (Katie Lucas) -- An influential Senator during the Clone Wars, Chi Eekway was a member of the inner circle of loyalists that advised Chancellor Palpatine during those trying times. She was rumored to have close contact with the mysterious Baron Papanoida.
  • Terr Taneel (Amanda Lucas) -- Taneel was a loyalist, serving in a committee close to Palpatine during the Clone Wars. She was one of the receiving Senators who waited on the Senate landing platform following Palpatine's rescue from General Grievous' clutches.
  • Zett Jukassa (Jett Lucas) -- A young Padawan at the time of the fall of the Jedi, Zett Jukassa studied in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. Bail Organa witnessed the death of the 10-year old Jedi student who valiantly defended the Jedi Temple before being cut down by an overwhelming barrage of clone trooper fire.

    Lucas Colletcor Set

Collectors will recall how quickly the previous George Lucas action figure -- Jorg Sacul -- sold out when offered a few years ago. History is destined to repeat itself with this exclusive offering, which depicts Lucas as a character actually seen in a Star Wars movie (unlike the Jorg Sacul figure). What's more, the entire cast of Lucas family cameos is here, offered for the first and only time by StarWarsShop!

Make sure to celebrate the Lucas Family legacy to the Star Wars universe by adding this set of StarWarsShop exclusives to your collection today.

    Man Admits To Uploading Sith

The night before it opened in theatres . . .

The folks who were arrested earlier this year for uploading Revenge of the Sith to the internet finally had their day in court.

    Here's a snippet:

A man admitted in court today that he uploaded a copy of "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith" onto the Internet the night before the film's worldwide theatrical release.

Huntington Beach resident Marc Hoaglin, 36, pleaded guilty in Los Angeles to uploading a copyrighted work being prepared for commercial distribution -- a violation of a law enacted this year that makes such conduct a federal felony.

The plea deal means he faces a sentence ranging from probation to six months behind bars.

Behind The Scenes Of The Sith Soundtrack

Posted By Dustin on December 13, 2005:

With out the sound you'd have no film . . .

Just posted at Starwars.com, a new article detailing what all is involved to get the great sound effects into a film such as Revenge of the Sith. There's more to it than you'd think!

    Here's a snippet:

"Suited up with a digital recorder, microphone and headphones, Wood captures the needed sounds from various angles and then returns to the studio to catalog all newly-recorded sounds with keywords. The files are then placed in a database accessible to Burtt -- who will use them at his discretion along with his vast library of sounds to create the new sound effects.

"We make several thousand new sounds for every Star Wars film," Wood adds. "The combination of the sound design recordings, the designed composites and the new Foley make up the bulk of this. Everything is categorized, named and listed in the database for searchable access. Every single sound passes through approval by Ben [Burtt]. Then the scenes get auditioned by George [Lucas] and mixed in with the music during the final mix.""
